Alessandro Safina, The tenor of Siena, talks about himself and his experience in the italian police service

Alessandro Safina as a singer you are very popular overseas , in which country in the world your performances have been welcomed with greater enthusiasm by the public?

Well i have singed in many countries, I must say that more enthusiastically I remember Sao Paulo Brasil where there were 100,000 people attending my concert, and South Korea where they have a great passion for singing for ' lyrics where was inaugurated the World Cup, then in Holland, depends aniway from the show i am called to perform, yes, in particular way i remember well theese two countries Brasil and South Korea.

Why are you more popular overseas than in Italy? Which music project you have for Italy?

No. No in Italy I'm fine , only that this period of life is not so good for the italian people, i want to be honest, here there is misery we are in a bad time, I tell you the truth I am sorry to say it, in many European countries and even Spain they are living a better economic situation , and the people of this european countries have less ecomonic problems than Italians which have serious economic difficultities. I tried to do things in Italy, i always found closed doors everywhere. I remember three or four years ago 'in many television shows, they used to invite me than one day before my performance was cancelled, i don't know what was the reason of theese cancellations to be sincere! Why do I have to force things or do I have to force myself, there are countries which require my artistic performances. I find it hard to work in Italy sometimes i do a little 'theater and then I take vacation, Italy is good for holidays. It 's not a choice you know .. and my performances depend on the number of requests i am called to perform , where 39 requests are overseas and 1 in Italy , what can I do? On the other hand, i am aware of my passion for the art but we do not only survive for the art ...

The New York Times recently wrote that Italy is a sad country. We would like to get your opinion
as an exporter of Italian music in the world, is Italy according your opinion a sad country?

It makes me lough to hear from americans that we are a sad countrry, It would be better they think of theyr sadness, as sadness they are far more' serious than us, and Italy is not 'a sad country, we are
just a bit 'like Brazilians, we have the sun inside because we have the good luck of being born, perhaps in one of the most beautiful countries in the world in the middle of the mediterranean beautiful and rich of history. The Italians have invented the story, all the arts, I would not say italians are sad, in this period of our life there are many problems that do not help us, this is not a period to be very happy, there are 'many people who barely earn 1000 Euros monthly and there is' nothing to laugh about, it does not mean that the Italians are sad, the Italians are considered very happy people.

Do you consider Pavarotti the best opera singer of the world?

You see I am allowed to think that does not exist the best opera singer and never existed . Each tenor has his own prerogatives certainly the great Luciano (Luciano Pavaorotti) I would call his name  like this, as i loved him so much and tried to understand him also when i was a student even now.. surely i'll never be able to sing like he used to sing. He has been one of the greatest tenor voices  of the century, however, the greatest ever does not exist. I consider the greatest aniway Caruso, then Gigli , Di Stefano, Mario Del Monaco ..
and then there are also great foreign tenors, however, he had something
particularly in his voice, he had the light in his voice... he was a master.

Why Pavarotti friends did not attend his funeral?

This i don't know, i am allowed to think that theese were extra causes and i am allowed to think that recently there has been familt missunderstanndings with his new family. I do not think that Carreras and Domingo did not attend Pavarotti funeral because they did not love him, this absolutely no. I am sure of this.

You have spent some years in the police service in the State police of Italy,
how many years did you spend in the state police of Italy?
yes also this oh yes!
in the police department of Castro Pretorio in Rome Italy i have done the police school and the medical examinations on 1984 i spent the military service in the State Police of Italy and i continued to stay some more years.
I used to drive police veichles i was smart to drive the old car FIAT OM, I spent 5 years in the State Police in force at the public order division in Florence headed by the great police chief Valerio Donnini , he probably don't remember me but i remember him so well, i still have many police friends in Florence.

Did you ever beat the hooligans with truncheon during public order duty?

I was beated often on duty on public order , in some moment i and my colleagues found ourselves in difficult situations, with fear because I remember once under the curve stadium  in Florence , during the football match Fiorentina Roma it seemd to be in the civil war. One hooligan got knifed, was  a disaster, and unfortunately these things happen and even worsten situations, it would be better theese theese hooligans fights would not exist , I am from Siena and now  it is are already 5 years that our team plays in the first division of italian national championscip, there are children playing soccer next to the football camp, the atmosphere felt is completely different. When someone goes to watch a football game with this violent intention on both side, bad accidents can occur. The dead of the police inspector Raciti, all theese things i have seen with my own eyes. During the years i spent in the police service no dead occurred, i remember of a railway wagon burned by hooligans of opposites team football clubs. At the stadium we have been beaten with stones and we have beaten hooligans with truncheon.

Did you ever sing for the police?

No, I never did, but would be pleased performing it, being a policeman for five years it is in my heart and when i left the police service was not easy because I left a sure wage but i have many good memories ...
